Beacon Group acquires List Logistics & Distribution, launches subsidiary
Jeff Berman, Senior Editor -- Logistics Management, 2/26/2008
TEWKSBURY, Mass.—Supply chain and facility services company The Beacon Group announced this week it has acquired third-party logistics (3PL) and distribution provider List Logistics & Distribution. Beacon said that through this deal, it will assume control of List’s assets and real estate, as well as establish a wholly-owned subsidiary dubbed BPL—Beacon Performance Logistics.
Financial terms of this acquisition were not disclosed.
“The Beacon Group was founded as a supply chain solutions and material handling system integrator,” said Beacon Group CEO George Yfantopulos, in an interview. “In our five years of doing business we have continued to grow our depth of experience and widen our services. During this time we have designed and implemented systems for several 3PL companies and have a clear understanding of this business and how it should be run from an operational standpoint. We felt that strategically this acquisition made perfect sense given our core strengths and competencies.”
BPL, according to a Beacon Group statement, is a logistics outsourcing company that offers shippers customized services related to their business process outsourcing, whether it be in the form of a third-party contract to manage fulfillment needs or a “4PL” offering based on a shipper’s specific supply chain objectives. And Yfantopulos commented in the statement that the creation of BPL will be a unique and dynamic logistics offering that the industry has never seen.
“Our belief is that few logistics integrators such as BPL are formed and developed in this manner,” said Yfantopulos. “The Beacon Group has an entire staff with cross functional expertise in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, material handling and information technology. The knowledge base at our disposal creates a differentiator in the marketplace. Managing a ‘simple’ warehousing contract is one thing, but we are confident that BPL will be able to manage an entire suite of outsourced business processes. While we will take on the role of 3PL in many instances, we have the in-house capability to serve as a 4PL, or ‘lead logistics integrator’ as dictated by our clients.”
As a wholly owned subsidiary of The Beacon Group, Yfantopulos explained that several executives from The Beacon Group and List will combine to serve as the management of BPL. He added they will leverage the experience and expertise of The Beacon Group to be certain we are delivering cost effective and quantifiable solutions to its customers.
Also included in this transaction is a 100,000 square-foot distribution center in Readville, Mass., said The Beacon Group. This facility—along with a facility and operation in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, will provide BPL with a launching point for new customers in both areas, the company said.
“BPL’s strategy is to grow a major presence in all distribution pockets in North America,” said George Schindler, former List Logistics President in a statement. “In addition to the Northeast and Central Mexico, we have immediate plans for locations in the south, southeast, and western regions of the U.S. Given the combined financial strength and customer base of both The Beacon Group and List, we are confident that BPL will hit the ground running.”
Yfantopulos said that the more than 20 employees formerly with List are now BPL employees.
