CASE STUDY: INSTITUTIONAL

BACKGROUND
The company is a distributor of materials that is used by the arts community.  They are a relatively new player to this market but have grown quickly during their short history and have substantially expanded the services. In addition to producing artist materials, they provide a number of support and technical resources that benefit artists, art conservators and the arts community.

CHALLENGE
While this company has been very pleased with its rapid growth and expansion of offerings, they are concerned about the level of customer service they are maintaining.  Additionally, they are posed with controlling their inventory on a “first in, first out” (FIFO) basis, balance their expanding product lines, and properly slot their product by color, size, and type.  These areas of concern are the point where they requested Beacon Systems get involved in their operation.

SOLUTION
Beacon Systems was contracted to design a new warehouse addition with modern distribution system technology. In this design we implemented a wide range of storage technologies including carton flow.  This storage medium allowed the customer additional ‘pick faces’ for their growing amount of stock keeping units (SKUs) and new product offerings. Additionally, to free up valuable space, Beacon performed an assessment of the current inventory and discarded any ‘dead’ items on hand.

RESULTS
All of the above modifications to customer’s distribution system allowed for a more lean and productive warehouse.  The revamped inventory enhanced the operators’ ability to fill orders faster and more efficiently.  Overall, the customer has been able to meet the growing demand of their business through effectively redesigning their material handling system.
